5 Hour Continuing Ed Classes
For Dealer License Renewal
5 HOUR CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASS MUST BE TAKEN PRIOR TO 12/31/12
During 2012 the 5 hour dealer continuing education classes will again be held at the community colleges throughout Iowa.
The following is an overview of the specialty classes dealers may select from:
PAPERWORK, PAPERWORK, PAPERWORK
This class will be an excellent refresher for the veteran dealer and beginning dealers will become familiar with every facet of paperwork required for operating a dealership in Iowa. Attendees will learn how to complete titles properly and related documents; as well as developing compliant procedures for cash sales, financed sales and wholesale sales that everyone at your dealership can follow to help ensure adherence, consistency and correctness. You will also discover how to set up your dealership to meet compliance requirements at the state and federal level. Updates from the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office and other state and federal agencies will be reviewed.
COMPLIANCE TOOLS FOR BUY HERE PAY HERE DEALERS
Participants will learn how to avoid fines and penalties. This class will provide an
in-depth discussion of policies and procedures that MUST be followed by BHPH dealers and those considering a buy here pay here dealership in Iowa. Advertising rules for dealerships will also be shared. Updates from the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office, the new Federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other state and federal agencies will be reviewed.
CARKNOWLOGY: FINANCING REGULATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Dealers who offer consumer financing and those considering making financing available should take this course to understand fully how to conduct business legally, ethically, and in compliance with state and federal law. Discover what lenders expect from you and your customers regarding compliance with sales, consumer finance rules, regulations and law. The course will include a review of the legal requirements of selling service contracts, warranties and insurance products, plus the importance of working with reputable providers. You will take part in a hands-on review of all legal requirements and document preparation for the sales of motor vehicles WHEN lenders are involved. Updates from the Iowa Department of
Transportation , the Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office, the new Federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other state and federal agencies will be reviewed.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY COMPLIANCE
DNR, EPA AND OSHA Requirements : If you think you are exempt, think again. This course will be beneficial to dealers who have service departments, body shops and those who have a used motor vehicle dealer license coupled with a recycler’s license. If you have employees, you will want to become better aware of these state and federal compliance issues. Updates from the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office and other state and federal agencies will be reviewed.
CLASS LOCATIONS, CLASS TIME AND COURSE NUMBERS WILL BE POSTED ON THE IIADA WEBSITE www.iowaiada.com and will also be included in Street Smart magazine throughout 2012.
During the winter months weather could play a factor, therefore, please listen to local radio stations to insure the class will be held.
If you arrive more than 15 minutes late the community college may ask that you register for a future class.
If you have any special needs, please let the community college know when you register for a class. You may bring an interpreter to class, but please let the college know that you will be doing so.

- CLASS TIMES
PRE-LICENSING
Applicants seeking to become a used motor vehicle dealer must take an 8 hour pre-licensing education class prior to obtaining a motor vehicle dealer's license.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
Currently licensed used motor vehicle dealers who wish to retain their dealer license must take a 5 hour course , every two years, and prior to renewal. COURSE MUST BE TAKEN PRIOR TO 12/31/2012 IN ORDER TO RENEW YOUR DEALERS LICENSE FOR 2013-2014.
INITIAL PHASE
The law became effective July 1st, 2007. Those who wish to remain as a used motor vehicle dealer in the state of iowa must take the required 5 hour continuing education class every two years and prior to license renewal. An applicant for renewal of a used motor vehicle dealer license who has met the pre-licensing education requirement within the preceding 24 months is exempt from the continuing education requirement for license renewal.
WHO MUST TAKE THE COURSE
At least one individual who is associated with the used motor vehicle dealer as an owner, principal, corporate officer, director or member or partner of a limited liability company or limited liability partnership shall complete the education program courses. Dealerships may send more than one individual to a class, however, certification will only be issued to the individuals described above. Identification may be required during the registration process. Payment will be required on a per person basis.
EXEMPTIONS
Motor vehicle rental companies having a national franchise; national motor vehicle auction companies; wholesale dealer only auction companies; used car dealerships owned by a franchise motor vehicle dealer; banks, credit unions, and savings and loan associations.
CLASS CONTENT
The educational programming will include, but not be limited to, the examination of federal and state laws applicable to the motor vehicle industry and federal and state regulations pertaining to used motor vehicle dealers.
PRE-REGISTRATION
The registration operator will ask for the class name and section number, participant's social security number or date of birth, name, address, phone number and email address. Prepayment is required. Credit cards accepted Visa, MasterCard, Discover
FEES 2012
The Iowa Department of Education has set the fees for the courses as follows:
Pre-licensing Course: $ 209.00 per person, includes instructional manual
Continuing Education Course: $ 159.00 per person, includes instructional manual
LATE ARRIVALS:
If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for a class the community college may ask that you reschedule
MULTIPLE DEALERSHIPS
A used motor vehicle dealer owning more than one dealership in Iowa is only required to attend one class for all of their licensed used motor vehicle dealerships. Please provide dealership location and dealer license number and the community college will issue the necessary certificates for multiple dealerships.
CERTIFICATION
A community college will issue a certificate of completion to each person who successfully completes a pre-licensing or continuing education course. The certificate must be posted conspicuously in the dealership.
TESTING
The course will not require testing.
REPORTING
The community colleges will transmit to the Iowa Department of Transportation the name of the dealership individual who took the course, the date, the required number of hours, the dealership name and other data as may be required.
WEATHER NOTES
During the winter months, inclement weather may cause college campuses or locations to close. Participants should listen to local radio stations for closing information specific to their scheduled class location.

Dealer education class attendees will be able to pick the type of class they would like to attend during 2012. All classes will be held at the major community colleges throughout the state of Iowa. The IIADA website will always have updated information on these classes. If you have any questions, please call IIADA 641-755-4177. Dealer education information may be found on the various community college websites as well.
You are welcome to bring an interpreter to class, but please notify the college that you will be doing so.
MAKE SURE IF YOU ARE AN EXISTING DEALER THAT YOU ONLY TAKE THE 5 HOUR CLASS. THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN A DEALER BEFORE SHOULD TAKE THE 8 HOUR CLASS.

IIADA ENCOURAGES THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER TAKEN ANY TYPE OF EDUCATIONAL OR DEALER TRAINING COURSES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 8 HOUR COURSE BECAUSE OF THE VALUABLE INFORMATION YOU WILL BE GIVEN. THOSE WHO HAVE HAD PRIOR EDUCATIONAL TRAINING REGARDING DEALERSHIPS MAY OPT FOR THE 5 HOUR COURSE.
INSTRUCTORS
IIADA WILL PROVIDE THE INSTRUCTORS FOR THESE COURSES AND THOSE CHOSEN AS INSTRUCTORS WILL, WHEN POSSIBLE, BE CURRENT OR FORMER DEALERS. ADDITIONALLY, SOME INSTRUCTORS WILL COME FROM THE REGULATORY SIDE OF THE INDUSTRY.
